These illustrations were created as my final assignment for my illustration class at ORU. The objective of the assignment was for students to demonstrate their acquired skills on a real-world project. We needed to create a cover illustration and an illustration for a spread.
Like in our infographic project, students were allowed to choose their own topic to create an illustration around. The topic could be an article, a public domain book, etc. If they could not come up with a topic on their own, they would be assigned a Bible story to illustrate.
I chose to to create my illustrations for an article from the blog the Viking Answer Lady: Courtship, Love, and Marriage in Viking Scandinavia. I planned to treat the blog as a magazine for the sake of the assignment.
First I created series of thumbnail sketches for my cover and spread.
After Finalizing my illustration, I created the linework.
I created my linework by hand on 9.5 x 12 in mixed media paper. The line art for the Viking wedding illustration was made with vine charcoal. Meanwhile, the frame weaving and still life were created with lead pencil work. After completing my linework, I put the images through a scanner that I could import into Photoshop.
Finally, I assembled the final products.
I utilized Photoshop to adjust my linework, apply color and texture, and paint over my still life. I assembled the images together for their final compositions using Adobe Illustrator.
When printed, the cover illustration should be 8 x 11 in while the spread should be 11 x 14 in.
